Top Rated Camcorders 2011
Today camcorders are found in almost everything we own including our cell phones, laptops and even our cars. Despite this there is still a solid demand for miniature, professional, waterproof, and helmet cams for all of life's adventures. Our cell phones and cameras are limited by both their quality and space and sometimes that webcam just doesn't do us justice.
The days of bulky cameras are over as the average consumer no longer wants to carry around a heavy backpack in order to record life's spontaneous events. As I was looking for my own miniature camcorder I came across some great options and decided to put together this list of the top rated camcorders of 2011. If you aren't sure which one you'd like, then make sure to check out our camcorder reviews below.
Top Rated HD Camcorders 2011
Best Pocket Camcorder - Flip Ultra HD Video Camera
We've chosen the Flip UltraHD Video Camera as our best pocket camera for its compact size, sleek style, and inexpensive price.
Don't let the size fool you the Flip Ultra HD can shoot up to 2 hours of HD 720p video at the push of a simple button. New to this particular model you also get Flip video's most recent technology, image stabilization which allows for a more stable video image. Shaky video was more than problematic in the past with such a tiny camera so you'll enjoy this feature. If you like to plug and play, the Ultra HD also has a built in USB arm to quickly allow you to load your videos to your PC.
Mini Waterproof Pocket Video Camera - Kodak Playzport Zx3
If you like to be out on the water or are an adrenaline junkie, then consider the Kodak Playzport Zx3 which not only gives you a great compact camera capable of shooting HD film, but also the ability to record underwater up to 10 feet.
Another great feature of the Zx3 is that it can take 5 megapixel HD stills so you don't have to worry about bringing your fragile camera along with you.
Sanyo VPC-GH4 Full HD 1080 Camcorder with 10X Dual Range Zoom
If you are looking for something a little better quality and a little more sophisticated than a flip camera, then consider the inexpensive Sanyo VPC-GH4 which features a 10x dual range zoom for capturing all of life's moments up close.
The VPC-GH4 also functions as a camera bringing you 10 megapixel quality photos. Don't let the full functionality fool you, this is still very much a compact cam that you can nearly fit into your shirt pocket.
Another advantage to the VPC-GH4 is that it shoots in full 1920x1080p resolution vs. slim or flip cameras that shoot in 720p. Despite the advantages it's still a little more awkward than the flip phone so you'll have to weigh your choices before making a decision.
Top Rated Helmet Camcorder - GoPro HD Helmet HERO Camera
If even the most durable pocket cam is not durable enough for you, then maybe you should take the next step and strap it to your head. The GoPro HD Helmet Hero Camera allows you to do that and still record in professional grade 1080p video.
You can quickly adjust the camera to one of three angles the (127º angle @ 30 fps, 16:9 aspect ratio), 960p (170º angle @ 30 fps, 4:3 aspect ratio), and 720p (170º angle @ 30 OR 60 fps, 16:9 aspect ratio). You can even program this helmet cam to take pictures at intervals in order to catch your most critical moments.
Waterproof
The GoPro HD Helmet Hero Camera is also waterproof up to an impressive 180 feet.
What's in the Box?
Don't worry GoPro didn't leave you hanging. This helmet camcorder also includes 2 helmet mounts, 2 flat mounts, and a head strap for a spectacular frontal view. Other included parts are a lace through strap mount (for use with vented helmts), a waterproof camera housing case, necessary cables, and battery. You'll need to go and purchase a separate SD card. I recommend you bundle it with the Kingston 32 GB Class 4 SDHC Flash Memory Card.
Other Top Rated Camcorders for 2011:
Although reviewing each individual camcorder goes beyond the scope of this article we recommend you check out the Toshiba Camileo which is a super inexpensive Flip Camera alternative camera that shoots in 1080p, and the Flip SlideHD Video Camera which features a 3-inch wide touchscreen that allows you to easily show off or manage your favorite videos.

You could take a look at something like the Canon VIXIA HF S30 - I'm not exactly sure what you're budget is but that's a mid-range level digital camcorder that has a mic jack. Another option is the Sony HDR-CX560V which I've heard does great in low light situations - I'm not sure if it has a mic jack but I would assume it does.

Do any of the new cam corders( flip or not) do a decent job at low light situations? I am a vocalist and need to record shows that will be on stage with lighting on stage- but not in the room itself. I'd like something that has an input for a mic. Any deals out there? I'd sure appreciate any knowledgeable advice!
